I’ll begin with a brief history and the origin of these Holiday Classics. The holiday cars began in 1973 as an uncatalogued limited-run dealer/distributor/insider gift. After 1978, Lionel paused the tradition. Lionel didn’t produce another Christmas Box car until the 1985 Employee Christmas Boxcar. Although assigned SKU number 6-9490 the 1985 car was also uncatalogued. This car has an interesting story of its own. Because of its rarity it has become the “Holy Grail” of Lionel Christmas Boxcars. To collectors. That is an entire story of its own.
In 1986 Lionel began a new tradition. with cataloged Christmas cars available to the public each year. The modern annual Christmas Boxcar series was born. The Holiday tradition continues to this day.
Lionel’s annual Christmas boxcars have become a cherished tradition among model train enthusiasts, collectors, and holiday decorators alike. Since the institution of the annual series, these festive boxcars have highlighted both the enduring appeal of Lionel trains and the continually evolving culture of holiday celebration in the model railroading community. Each release is more than just a boxcar, it’s a time capsule of artistic style, production innovation, and the deep connection between Lionel and its legions of fans.
The line of Lionel Christmas cars has expanded over the years as their popularity has grown. Over the years they have produced all sorts of holiday cars carrying all sorts of loads. With more coming every year. The Popularity of the Polar Express and other holiday sets have only accelerated the production of holiday cars. Lionel now makes holiday cars and sets in HO and even S gauge for their American Flyer line.
Some cars feature animation or popular figures like Frosty the Snowman, the Peanuts gang and many others. Lionel makes holiday cars that play holiday music, cars that feature holiday lights, they have even made a caboose featuring an animated Santa Claus. Now they make personalized holiday cars. You name it, they have probably made it or will make it.
Lionel is once again making uncatalogued special edition holiday cars for their employees, clubs, and other organizations. Other manufacturers are also making holiday cars. For this thread I am going to focus on the forty years of Lionel’s cataloged annual traditional O gauge Christmas Cars and conclude this post with a list of those cars.
